Dr Gagliardi began working in the field of alcohol/ drug abuse in 1972. Over the past 45 years, Dr. Gagliardi has worked as an alcohol/ drug abuse prevention consultant, trainer, educator, alcohol/ drug abuse counselor, physician and professor.
In 1986, he was one of the first 800 physicians nationally certified as a Addictions Medicine Specialist by the American Society of Addiction Medicine. He is also a fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. In 2009, Dr. Gagliardi was one of only 1500 physicians nationwide who became board certified in Addiction Medicine by the newly created America Board of Addiction Medicine. Since 1986, as Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr Gagliardi has taught addictions issues to medical students .
For 25 years, Dr. Gagliardi practiced both Family Medicine and Addiction Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. In 2007, he retired from Family Medicine to devote his time to the practice of Addiction Medicine.
In 2008, Dr. Gagliardi founded the Rt 1 Free Medical Clinic, providing free medical care and medicines to the homeless and indigent of Howard County.
With such an extensive career in alcohol/ drug abuse treatment, Dr Gagliardi has a unique and comprehensive perspective on alcohol and drug abuse issues and treatment.
In addition to practicing Addiction Medicine, Dr. Gagliardi has lectured at numerous medical conferences and to general audiences on topics including: medical consequences of addiction; preventing alcohol/ drug abuse in the family; intervening in alcohol/drug abuse in the family; pitfalls of prescribing controlled substances; the effects of substance abuse on the brain; the neurobiology of addiction; the medical consequences of substance abuse.
Dr. Gagliardi is available to lecture at schools, civic, parent and community organizations.
